How long can I actually drive with a slipping transmission before it fails completely?

So I'm in a bit of a predicament with my 2014 A6 2.0 TDI and I'm hoping for some brutally honest advice from people who've been through this. The transmission has been showing signs of slipping for the last couple of weeks, mostly when accelerating gently from a stop where the revs will flare up slightly before the gear engages properly.
